There are certain appliances that no kitchen is complete without, and a toaster is one of them. Breakfast just wouldn’t be the same without a toasted bagel or slice of bread with your favorite topping – it’s what gets millions of us through the day. While the process of making toast is essentially the same with every device on the market, some get the job done far better than others do and the sheer number of toasters makes choosing the right one for your counter top a very difficult task indeed. Fortunately, we are here to help you out and have put together a list of the top five best toasters in 2016 for making that perfect breakfast meal.

There’s a lot to like about the Frigidaire Professional 4-Slice Wide Slots Toaster; it looks good, it’s affordable and its build quality is first class. While it appears fairly basic, this stainless-steel toaster comes with a decent set of features, including four wide slots – large enough for NY-style bagels – a simple lift-out lever, an auto-defrost function and unique countdown indicator, which is displayed on a bright LCD screen. One the downside, the Frigidaire does not always cook the most even toast, with the bottom of the bread sometimes popping up on the border between well done and burnt.
When it comes to toaster reviews, the pick of the bunch are generally of the four-slice variety, so the fact the Cuisinart CPT-420 Touch to Toast Leverless 2-Slice Toaster has managed to make the top 5 is a real credit to the quality of this appliance. Of course, two-slices will not be enough for everyone (there is a four-slice version available at a cost), but if you cook toast for yourself, the Cuisinart is a solid choice. The stainless steel build gives the device a modern look and the one-touch Bagel, Defrost, and Reheat options are as simple as you could hope for. There is also an LCD screen for temperature control. Bread is sometimes a bit on the light side and there is a strange odor that comes from the device during the first few cycles, which prevents this toaster placing any higher.
An extremely affordable, four-slice toaster that comes with a cooking tray to poach, soft or hard boil eggs, and light-to-dark controls for cooking the perfect toast – it surely doesn’t get any better than this? Well the West Bend Egg and Muffin Toaster is pretty darn good, giving you a full breakfast in less than ten minutes; however, while the eggs cook great, the toast does not always cook to the top due to the shallowness of the slots. Flaws aside, if you are looking to save counter space and cook up breakfast with minimum fuss then there are few better gadgets on the market.
Breville is a name never far away from the discussion when talking about top kitchen appliances, and the Smart Toaster is so nearly our best toaster on the market. The brush die-cast metal body is as stylish as it is easy to maintain and the LED toast progress indicator is an excellent feature, but not the best – that belongs to the convenient slide out crumb tray. In terms of cooking toast, the Breville does a great job, cooking up even slices of any shaped bread thanks to its ‘Lift and Look’ cartridge. Yes, it’s slightly over-engineered, but it is also brilliant.
So, to the best toaster of all, the one that cooks the best toast and provides the best value for money. And the honor goes to … the KitchenAid KMT422ER 4 Slice Toaster (in Empire Red because its looks fantastic). As you’d expect from a KitchenAid product, this toaster oozes class. While it does cost a little bit more than your average toaster, the quality of toast, and the ease in which it cooks it, are worth every cent. Bagels, bread, muffins – this toaster can toast, defrost and reheat them all and look effortlessly stylish while doing so.
